Our Journey
We have two sons, one with multiple food allergies. Our oldest son was very young when he was diagnosed with dairy and egg allergies. And progressed to more. Dairy, egg, soy, corn, tree nuts, shellfish, rosemary, sesame, and sunflower seeds. We were so lost when it first started, I didn’t know what or how I would feed him.
I went grocery shopping for hours and came home with nothing sometimes. I didn’t know how to read labels or what I was even looking for, but I learned through the help and patients of friends, family, doctors, and nutritionists.

We taught him from an incredibly early age what he could eat and/or touch and what he couldn’t. he was four when we were teaching him how to use the epi pen. It was always out of fear of the unknown. At a family event people would say it’s all family. He’s safe, no one is going to let him get hurt. But this is all the older generation. Who was going to hand my kid a cookie and think it was no problem or pinch his cheeks after eating a cannoli with the powdered sugar and cream on their hands or kiss his fat face after drinking something with milk in it like coffee or tea.
These are all thoughtless, nothing things to the ordinary person. But to someone’s child with food allergies these can be deadly. I mean one of his first reactions was to Dorito’s. My husband ate them at work, thought he was extra careful with them, even cleaned up before coming back home. And sent him to the ER after a kiss hello. Yes, it’s that bad.
What We Can Control
We have it all well under control now, but that is because we have been so vigilant, in cooking making things from scratch or tweaking recipes, planning, school discussions, party interactions and the fact that he, himself knows everything he needs to know to keep himself safe.
Education & Meal Time
We learned as a family to alter recipes to suit our needs. So, we could all enjoy every meal together, while being safe. Now most of these recipes are regular recipes that everyone cooks. Nothing fancy, nothing extraordinary just home cooked and made with love. Maybe just a glance through this material will help another mother learn to alter her own recipes for her child. Because no one really understands food allergies unless they’ve dealt with it themselves.
Please use whatever ingredients you can or like. I am not promoting any ingredient. But I know it helped me learning how to cook with food allergies to know the exact ingredients that were used. So, the only reason I am telling you the brand names that are staples in my kitchen. Is because it helped me.
If there is a different ingredient that is safe for you. Please use that. Consult with nutritionists and doctors to help guide you.
Keep a food log to bring to your allergist, nutritionist, and gastrointestinal doctors. This just is a collection of things that helped me along the way.
