Homemade Maple Syrup

This is it, this is the recipe! If you haven’t been following all of my food allergy recipe posts. This homemade maple syrup is the one to keep, post, share etc.

Food allergies can be discouraging especially when you realize corn is in everything, but you are allergic to corn. I have found this to be the case with a lot of food. Thankfully my son’s corn allergy is one of his minor allergies and Corn is literally in everything. So even though we try to steer clear of corn it is almost impossible. We are constantly reading labels.

When you read the labels : did you know that Ingredients are listed in order of how much is in that particular food item.

So essentially, if corn is listed as corn syrup on the label ingredient list, but is listed last. It is the ingredient that is least present in the food you are about to purchase.

I mention this because most maple syrups on the shelf at the grocery store do have corn syrup in them. Which yes, corn is nearly impossible to stay away from but we do if we can.

I decided one day, I wanted him to have maple syrup, but the ones on the shelf that were safe for him to consume were massively expensive. I started researching how to make homemade maple syrup. It seemed pretty straight forward with only a few ingredients.

I had all of my ingredients and started to prepare it, but I opened up the cabinet and saw so many things to enhance this sugar water with to make it more scrumptious. I couldn’t resist.

I got a little carried away but the end result is now the perfect mix of fall maple goodness! No other maple syrup even tastes good to us anymore.

I woke up one morning to my oldest son trying to make this Homemade maple syrup for all of us to enjoy breakfast one Saturday morning. I is a memory I will never forget and still puts a smile on my face. This recipe has become staple in our everyday lives and a recipe that will be handed down for generations to come.

This homemade maple syrup is an ingredient listed to enhance this Honey Barbecue Sauce recipe which is a show stopping enhancement to any barbecue.

Homemade Maple Syrup

Ingredients –

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon honey (or a little more if you like, it helps with thickness)
  • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
  • A pinch (½) of the 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg

Homemade Maple Syrup Directions –

Step 1 – Mix all above ingredients in a heavy bottom medium sauce pan.

Step 2 – bring to a boil, stirring occasionally with a new spoon each time. Watching very carefully so it doesn’t boil over! Very important!

Step 3 – As soon as it comes to a boil shut off and completely remove from heat

Step 4 – add the flavoring. 1 ½ tablespoon maple extract or any flavoring get creative! Maybe instead try a strawberry or blueberry flavoring (I have tried blueberry and got no complaints!)

Step 5 – Enjoy warm if you like a thin syrup or cool completely to room temperature. Then add to container of your choice and store in the refrigerator until ready to enjoy. It thickens perfectly.

I hope you Enjoy this Homemade Maple Syrup! It’s Our Family Favorite!
