How to Create Chocolate Feathers

Where to begin?

Flamingo shaped cake

Chocolate feathers are actually easy to create if you know how. I had no idea how to create chocolate feathers. I tend to learn my making mistakes and this this was a fun cake to make. The only direction I was given was Flamingo. She wanted a flamingo cake. I went on Pinterest for inspiration of course, but wasn’t seeing what I wanted to create.

I had this idea to do this flamingo standing in water but didn’t know how exactly to execute it.

Eventually, I took a regular platter from the dollar store and screwed a wooden dowel in the center. I used cake supports to create the legs which would ultimately support the cake itself and viola!

The flamingo was created, but since this is a “how to” on creating feathers out of chocolate, let’s get to that!

First, take whatever colored chocolate candy melts you have. Melt them according to the directions either in the microwave or a double boiler. Either one is fine as long as they are melted. this make no difference when creating your chocolate feathering look.

After melting your chocolate

Step 1 –

Step 1 – Take a piece of parchment paper and lay it out. Using a wide bristled clean paint brush, paint the chocolate in strips onto the parchment paper to create an individual chocolate feather.

(this may take a bit of practice to get the right thickness. Too thin and the feather will break, too think and the feather won’t look right) so try a couple before doing them all.

Step 2 –

Step 2 – Once they have cooled about ten minutes or so, you should be able to release them from the parchment paper. (if you gently rub your finger along the back side of the parchment paper, behind the feathered chocolate, it should help release the chocolate feather more easily without breaking it.)

Step 3 –

Step 3 – gently press the chocolate feather pieces into your frosting on your cake in the positions that work for you.

Optional step 4 –

Hope this helps to take your next cake to the next level!

Chocolate feathers may look so delicate and hard to create but with some practice and layering you will make your designs look like a culinary piece of art!

Enjoy!
